Google virtual try-on is no longer an experiment. On April 30, 2026, Google shuts down its Doppl app and moves virtual try-on technology directly into Google Search and Google Shopping. Every fashion and apparel retailer in the U.S. needs to understand what this means — and act before the deadline.

This is not a story about Google. It is a story about visibility, returns, and the new rules of retail commerce. If your products are not optimized for this shift, they risk becoming invisible to millions of shoppers starting this month.

What Happened to Doppl — and Why It Matters

Google launched Doppl as a standalone virtual try-on app. Shoppers could upload a photo and see how clothing looked on their body before buying. The experiment worked. So Google made a decisive move: shut down the app and integrate the technology into its core Search and Shopping product.

Starting April 30, any shopper browsing Google Search or Google Shopping can tap a supported product listing and click “Try It On.” No separate app needed. No extra steps. The technology is now one click away for hundreds of millions of Google Shopping users during their normal discovery process.

The early numbers are striking. Macy’s launched its AI stylist chatbot “Ask Macy’s” in March 2026, powered by Google Gemini. Customers who engage with the AI assistant spend 4.75 times more per visit than those who do not. L’Agence, Zalando, and Zara are already partnering with Google for AI try-on campaigns. The commercial outcomes are measurable — not just convenience improvements.

For retailers not yet optimized for this environment, the risk is direct: your products will not appear in try-on results. Your competitors’ products will.

The Returns Crisis That Google Virtual Try-On Targets

To understand why this shift is so significant, consider the scale of retail’s returns problem. U.S. retail returns reached $849.9 billion in 2025. Online fashion return rates run between 20% and 40%, compared to under 10% for in-store purchases. Gen Z shoppers aged 18 to 30 averaged nearly eight online returns per person last year, according to the National Retail Federation.

Most returned items never reach the shelf again. Each return costs the retailer in reverse logistics, processing, restocking, and markdowns. For a retailer generating $50 million in annual online fashion sales, a 25% return rate means $12.5 million in gross merchandise value flowing backward through the supply chain every year.

Virtual try-on attacks this problem at its root. When shoppers see how a garment looks on their body — from multiple angles and in different colors — they buy with more confidence and return less. Every retailer watching margins compress should pay close attention to this technology.

What Google Virtual Try-On Requires from Retailers

Virtual try-on inside Google Search does not happen automatically. Retailers must meet specific technical requirements for their products to appear in try-on results. Here is what Google requires:

  • High-quality product imagery: Google’s AI model needs clean, well-lit images against a neutral background. Low-resolution or cluttered images produce poor results and may disqualify products from try-on eligibility.
  • Accurate product data in Google Merchant Center: Titles, descriptions, sizing, and color variants must be complete and structured for machine readability. Stale feeds will not surface in AI-powered search results.
  • Supported product categories: Currently, Google supports tops, bottoms, dresses, and shoes. Lingerie, swimwear, and most accessories remain unsupported.
  • Google Shopping integration: Products must be active in Google Shopping with a verified Merchant Center account. Products not in Google Shopping cannot participate in try-on results.
  • Structured data markup: Proper schema markup on product pages helps Google understand attributes and increases the likelihood of appearing in enriched results including try-on features.

Retailers with clean product photography and well-maintained Merchant Center feeds are already ahead. Those who have not invested in this infrastructure face a real competitive disadvantage starting April 30.

The Physical Store Angle: What This Means for In-Store Technology

Here is where the conversation shifts from e-commerce strategy to something I work on directly. The gap between the online and in-store experience is closing fast. Shoppers who discover products through Google virtual try-on arrive at the store with higher purchase intent and more specific expectations. They already know what they want. What they need from the physical store is confirmation, speed, and a frictionless transaction.

This changes how you should think about your store’s technology. The kiosk, the POS, the digital signage — these are no longer just operational tools. They are the final handshake between the AI-assisted discovery journey and the in-store conversion moment. That handshake needs to be seamless.

Retailers with integrated technology — where online product data feeds cleanly into the in-store experience — capture the full value of this Google shift. The Latin America Opportunity Inside This Shift

Most coverage of Google virtual try-on focuses on U.S. and European markets. The implications for Latin America are significant and largely underdiscussed.

Fashion e-commerce in Latin America grows at double-digit rates annually. Mobile commerce dominates — most shoppers in Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil discover and buy products on smartphones. Google Search is the dominant discovery channel across the region. As virtual try-on expands its language and market support, Latin American retailers face the same pressure to optimize product data and imagery — but with less runway and fewer resources.

The retailers in LatAm who move early — cleaning up product feeds, investing in professional photography, and connecting Merchant Center accounts — will hold a structural advantage when Google expands virtual try-on in the region. Early movers in technology adoption consistently outperform. I have seen this pattern repeat across every market where I have led deployments.

What the AI-Powered Path to Purchase Means for Your POS

There is a downstream implication most retail operators are not yet discussing: the transaction moment is changing. When a shopper arrives at your store already having tried on the product virtually, the purchase decision is already made. The POS interaction becomes a confirmation, not a selling moment.

This shifts the priority at the point of sale from persuasion to speed and accuracy. Every second of friction — a slow system, a payment method not accepted, a price discrepancy between the app and the shelf — risks abandonment at the highest-intent moment in the customer journey.

Can your system process the full range of payment methods your AI-primed customer expects? Is your inventory accurate enough to prevent a “sorry, that’s out of stock” moment after the customer has already decided to buy? Your April 30 Checklist: Before Google Virtual Try-On Goes Live

You have 15 days. Here is what to prioritize:

  • Audit your Google Merchant Center feed. Check for missing attributes, outdated pricing, and incomplete size or color variant data.
  • Review your product photography. Identify top-selling fashion SKUs and assess whether imagery meets Google’s requirements. Clean backgrounds, professional lighting, and multiple angles are the standard.
  • Verify your structured data markup. Run product pages through Google’s Rich Results Test. Fix schema markup errors that could prevent products from appearing in enriched search features.
  • Check your Google Shopping approval status. Disapproved products cannot participate in try-on results. Resolve any policy violations before April 30.
  • Align your in-store inventory data. When a customer discovers your product via try-on and visits your store, your inventory system must reflect real-time availability.

The Bigger Picture: AI Is Reshaping How Customers Find and Buy

Google virtual try-on is one piece of a larger transformation. AI is changing how consumers discover products, evaluate options, and make purchase decisions across every category.
